FILM COMPOSITION

Jeremy has been a film fan for most of his life, so it was fitting when he eventually found himself scoring films.

Like most film composers, he mostly fell into the job by having film makers as friends, but from that initial position he has excelled in this realm. His knowledge of a vast array of genres, compositional techniques and instrumental timbre allows him to craft scores that have enough familiarity to be welcoming, but with enough fresh material and ideas to make it stand out as something new.

He started scoring short films creating soundtracks that went from cool jazz, to hardcore breakbeats; from arrangements for chamber ensembles to writing original pop songs for the themes. He has since moved into creating the score and often the sound design for feature films. He has worked in a wide range of film styles and maintains his musical versatility through the projects he takes on.

Short Films

Jeremy has created scores for a number of competition films and has been nominated for, and awarded best score on several occasions. For the Waikato 48hour Film Fest, Jeremy has been nominated for best score for every film he has scored – often competing against himself in that category. In 2007 he was nominated for best score for all 3 films he scored. He won for the score for “Mists of Ureia”. After a break in 2008, Jeremy returned to the 48hour competition with nominations for the 2 films he scored, winning best score for “Hardwood Floors”

In other short film news:

'BEAT' is a short dance film created by Virginia Pitts with choreography by Karen Barbour and music by Jeremy Mayall. The film was created with support from the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship programme at the University of Waikato.

This film was screened as part of the Cinesonika International Film Festival. The theme of this international film and video festival is to celebrate the soundtrack. Usually in cinema festivals there is a fixation on movie stars, or captivating imagery, or the literary qualities of screenplays. Sound tends to be relatively unvalorized in moving-image making. The intent of the festival is to give attention to innovative work in the creation of film and video soundtracks, and to give due credit to the importance of audio in audiovisual media.

»

They No Longer Sleep Alone

(www.chasingtimeproductions.co.nz; www.imdb.com/title/tt1438263/)

The story of They No Longer Sleep Alone is ambitious in that through a series of eleven lyrical chapters it captures the story of one man, Howard, a musician, who has become trapped by his emotional and spiritual confusion.  Through a series of life experiences, Howard feels the encapsulating and overwhelming power that love can produce, both as a victim of a broken heart, and later the honesty of true love.

They No Longer Sleep Alone is now complete and currently in consideration for Film Festivals in the USA and Australia.

Copies of this film are available through the Shop.

Life should be easy for Jamie Baker. He has just turned eighteen, he is a star rugby player, he is finishing high school in a few months and the world is at his feet. The only problem is that Jamie's dream in life is far away from the sports fields of New Zealand and this is something his father and friends would never understand.

This film was scored in a pop/rock influenced style.
